Microsoft’s Xbox division has seen an almost complete 180 on the direction the division was headed with the launch of the Xbox. Two years later, several updates and features have been added to the Xbox that no one expected to see, including backwards compatibility with a handful of Xbox 360 games. Now Xbox executive Kudo Tsunoda says these features are what makes the Xbox a better choice than PC.
Tsunoda started the interview by discussing cross-play and its importance to both Xbox One and PC gamers. Tsunoda says cross-play is a unique value that “only we can offer.”
You still need very gamer-focused values, but there’s lots of things you can do with our technology. We’ve really got a lot more going on [than our competitors]. We’re doing things that can’t be done on any other console.
In regards to backwards compatibility, Tsunoda says it was the number one requested feature for the Xbox team, which is why his team has spent so much time working on it for Xbox owners.
With backwards compatibility, it isn’t something that we just think gamers might want. We know. We’re looking for and soliciting that feedback. It was the number one most requested feature for Xbox One by far.
With the new Xbox UI update that’s coming this fall, Microsoft is poised to yet again change the way you interact with your console. What do you think? Is Microsoft moving in the right direction by focusing on cross-play and backwards compatibility?
