Xbox One and Xbox 360 users won’t be able to voice chat with each other

Xbox One and Xbox 360 users won’t be able to engage in cross-chat chat sessions. Instead, Xbox owners divided by the two platforms will be able to communicate by digital smoke signals, better known as text messages.

This information comes from Microsoft’s Marc Whitten, who confirmed this info during an interview with IGN. The Xbox VP cited technical hangups, including sound quality issues that currently prevent voice chat between the two consoles. Friends will be able to see each other online, but as of now Xbox One and Xbox 360 party chats won’t be an option.

    oh well

  • The Unknown Legacy

One of the questions I’m frequently asking myself for both Xbox One and PS4 is if for example my friend has Destiny on Xbox360 or PS3. Will I, as a PS4 or Xbox One owner, be able to play with them if i had Destiny on my next gen console?

If anyone has an answer please tell me.

well i think bungie was going for servers across all platforms but because microsoft is going to be microsoft i think the xbox versions will be seperated onto their own thing. not sure if 360 will be on the same severs as xb1 but they definitely wont be willing to share server space with sony without some major convincing. honestly it might be better that way to avoid squabbling between fanboys of both sides.

      • The Unknown Legacy

I didn’t mean Sony consoles playing online with Microsoft consoles. I meant current gen Sony consoles playing online with Next gen Sony consoles. Or current microsoft consoles playing online with next gen microsoft consoles. So Ps3 x Ps4 or Xbox360 x Xbox One. But thanks for answering!

        • companyoflosers

i wouldnt see that as being too far of a stretch. as far as i am aware the only difference between the two versions is the graphics. it would be no different then one person playing a pc running a game at medium while another person runs it at max. i suppose there may be some difference in how a 360 and xb1 communicate with each other but the bulk of that could be handled by the server i think. id think that most would rather play it on the newer consoles though. they may dissalow cross generation play to encourage people to buy the new console. if there was no limitation like that on multi generation games, it would delay people getting consoles and they would rather you buy at release while its still at its highest price then later when there may be a price drop.

          • Gilbert Nicks

PS3 to PS4 wont allow cross play but for their MMO titles… now if ur talking about COD BF4 its up to MS… are they going to cloud host the new 360 and ps3 titles? for what i understand most if not all of Xbox one online games will be cloud server hosted and no longer player hosted… I would assume Sony is doing the same with ps4 if they wont to compete… but if they only purchased that 1 company and its servers… PSN is going to have some issues. due to them planning to not only host online games… but cloud gaming and remote play from other consoles and of course remote play from vita.

          • companyoflosers

but for a game like destiny i cant imagine they wont do cross generation play.

          • Gilbert Nicks

yea that is really up to MS and publishers of Destiny… but not real telling..

I am just hoping MS removes its cross plat ban to allow PC and xbox one gamers play at least.. they did it for shadownrun… why not ALL games?

          • companyoflosers

because they want to give people incentive to buy the console. if they go cross platform with pc, theres a large demographic of people who will chose buying just the game since they already have a capable pc rather than buy the game and the console. thats why there are a good portion of console selling titles that never go to pc or take a really long tim like halo for example and even that hasnt had a pc release since halo 2.

          • Gilbert Nicks

Not really true… have to understand most console gamers dont own a high end PC and sadly some are just ignorant of PCs… Yes i know there are a % that are all around gamers… but not as many as you think.

          • companyoflosers

yes but there are enough to take it into consideration. just look at all the pc elitists trolling youtube and websites like this. that means there are potential customers out there who have enough money to spare to build a pc. they want to get in on that action with their consoles as much as possible they have more to gain by going console first then multiplatform later than they do going multiplatform right off the bat.

          • Arthur Hughes

The biggest issue is you can’t control whats on the PC. Its easy as hell to find hacks for games on pc that Steam and such don’t find/catch. Also their is almost always an advantage to use a Keyboard mouse over a controller. As an Example If i can still play with my friends on XBL while being able to play on a PC for COD giving me an advantage of using a mouse for aiming why would i buy it on the console? I buy it on pc and now Microsoft gets None of that money.

          • Gilbert Nicks

I never felt i was at a disadvantage playing starlancer or Quake or Unreal on dreamcast vs PC users… hell allot of people on PC do use controllers now… my local college we have L4d matches and a few other games and most of them use wired 360 controllers

        • bizzy gie

          PS4 and PS3 do it.

    • Arthur Hughes

I highly doubt it will be backwards compatible online with either console.

      • The Unknown Legacy

Alright thanks everyone! I’m mostly concerned about how changing consoles will affect your stats in certain games like Final Fantasy 14 or even Cod Ghosts. If you lose stats then I don’t see the point of getting most games on current gen if they’re going to next gen.

        • Arthur Hughes

Im not going to look for it but i believe BattleField 4 stats for Mplayer will move with you

          • The Unknown Legacy

            Alright, thanks for responding!

          • Arthur Hughes

Hopefully with Call of duty Elite, and since its the same gamertag, Ghosts could have the same thing on the Xbox One. Maybe they will say something about it tomorrow.

        • bizzy gie

FFIV has cross-platform play between PS4 and PS3.

          • The Unknown Legacy

Oh thank god. Because I plan on getting FF14 for both consoles and I don’t want all my hard work going to waste considering it’s an MMOJRPG I plan on playing for a long time on both consoles. Thanks!

      • bizzy gie

PS4 is with PS3 for FFIV (and PC too).

    • Morris ヅ

ps3 and ps4 mayb but i reckon X1 n 360 wont even cross plat, and microsoft needs to buk there ideas and do somthing like this would make the world feel larger with more people

      • The Unknown Legacy

Alright thanks! I think it would be a better idea for current gen to play with next gen. Because there are some of my friends who wont be getting a PS4 on launch but will be buying games like Destiny, I just don’t want to be forced to get it on PS3 and PS4 to play with them online and to enjoy it with great graphics.

        • Morris ヅ

same , there will be more users on this gen then next gen for a wile but i just cant see microsoft doing it tho witch is a shame…

unless they have changed there minds???

  • Morris ヅ

im sure down the line they will bring some form of chat were we can chat to 360 users just the sound aint going to sound as rich

  • Arthur Hughes

This actuall saddens me a bit, and hope they get it patched into the 360 in the near future.

Me and a few friends are routinely in a party while playing other games. We have had 6 people in a party with all 6 of us in different games. Some of them are getting xbox one day one others getting it for xmas, others after tax refund. Be a bit sad with us all broken up between the 2 systems.

    • ImperialAgent

Yeah I guess this will be awkward for some people, for a while anyway.

  • Fweds

Just remember you are going to get “CD quality” sound on the Xbox one and that would not be possible if they allowed cross chat.

XBOX 1 = Streams 24 kHz at a 16-bit resolution “uncompressed” both downstream and upstream. (amazing)

    Xbox 360 = streams 16 kHz downstream and 8 kHz upstream at a 14-bit
    resolution compressed..

So you see why it is best not to have cross chat it would be a backward step, the PS4 is believed to only have less quality than of the Xbox 360 , light years behind the Xbox One

Sounds awesome. Will make a big difference to online play. We’re gonna get a really high quality online experience I can’t wait.

  • TheRedButterfly

Honestly, it’s a bit ridiculous to complain about this… That’d be like me being disappointed that my floppy disks don’t work with my MacBook Pro.

    • ImperialAgent

yeah it makes sense that it’s not ideal for everyone but this is a new gen and not everything is gonna perfectly blend and mesh together.

    • Arthur Hughes

      but they do

When you said it i was like, Im sure they still make these things somewhere.

      • TheRedButterfly

There’s a workaround on Macs, sure… But the Text Messages remedy the “issue” in the same way, so any bitching is still irrelevant.

  • Gilbert Nicks

IDK why people are soo worried about it… you cant play on the same servers or anything. Also you couldnt cross chat from Xbox to Xbox 360 and no one complained

  • Ilovegoogleglass

I hoped they release skype for Xbox 360 in this we could do a video chat of some sort.

  • Rocco

I fail to see why this is such a big deal? The only people I would care to talk to online chat would be my personal friends, and they will all be getting the new Xbox One.

    • Arthur Hughes

I chat with 6-8 friends almost nightly usually we are all playing differnt games. Some of them are getting the xbox one launch others are not. Be kind of sad to miss out chatting with friends that have not upgraded yet. (although granted within a year this will not matter at all)
