Do you really care about the Xbox One’s size and power brick? [POLL]

Xbox-One-Brick

In terms of game consoles, the Xbox One is pretty darn big, but does that really matter? “It looks like a cable box or a VCR!” But here’s the thing, these two items belong in your entertainment center — well maybe not a VCR, but you get the point.

There’s no denying that the Xbox One is a full-figured console, but the real question is, does it look out of place in your living room or game room’s setup? Unless you have a lime green TV with purple stripes, your answer should be no it doesn’t. But let’s face it, gamers are a fickle bunch and people love to complain about things.

“But it has a big power brick, the PS4 doesn’t!” While a large external power supply isn’t the most attractive thing to look at, last time we checked, it had nothing to do with games and other forms of entertainment. We’re no team of hardware engineers, but something tells us that the Xbox One’s power supply is external for a reason.

If you’re obsessed with having a small console, there are plenty of Gamecubes and PS2 Slims for sale on eBay for very reasonable prices. Both of these fantastic consoles have truckloads of amazing games to choose from. If these two legendary machines are too old for your liking, the OUYA is another game box that won’t occupy too much space.

All sarcasm aside, we feel that next-gen is truly about games and entertainment. Have you ever looked at the size of most gaming PCs? While they’re typically reserved for the Master Race, they tend to be pretty bulky.

As you can most likely tell, we’re not too moved by the Xbox One’s size and external power supply. As long as the machine runs quietly and the brick is stowed away safely, we really don’t care. Give us some good games, unique entertainment features and the new Kinect doing what Microsoft claims it’s capable of and we’re happy. It’s a tall order, but it just might be possible.

Personal opinions aside, we’d like to hear your thoughts on this overblown topic, so feel free to cast your vote and pour your heart out in the comments below. Don’t worry, we won’t judge you.

  • Morris ヅ

That Power Brick is the most Beautiful Power Brick out there come November

    • Sheldon Prescott

I thought I was the only one who thought that. The power brick looks so sexy! Can I marry it?

      • Morris ヅ

        lol if you wna

    • bizzy gie

Two toned with ‘Xbox’ on it is beauty?

      Sigh

That’s not much of an accomplishment considering their main competition’s is internal.

    • andrew salvat

to be honest it look beautiful and I don’t know if will go in the back of my TV. It look to good to put it back there

      • Morris ヅ

lol i got to re organize when this sexy thing comes home with me

  • Slickst3r

Why do people care so much about the power bricks size?

    • Arthur Hughes

People are pathetic and look to complain about the most mundane of things to justify their choices.

      • SLOBMARE

i understand the way you feel. when i was a professional scooter racer in goosetoot new mexico i felt the same way. i always took my time to butter up my knees and race like a little fuzzy bunny with its tail on fire. things like this shodden happen to a person trying to find a parking spot on top of a mountain.

      • Danny

Because we travel or work abroad..It’s a global economy for more and more of us. Also brick doesn’t mean cooler as the PS3 always ran cooler than the 360.

    • Kamille

because it takes tons of space and is not easy to hide. But if we go by you guys: who cares about about backward compatibility, who cares about double A batteries for the controller, who cares about power bricks, who cares about size, who cares about paying to play online, who cares about anything because I’m a fanboy! All these consoles would be better machines than what they are if it weren’t for people like you that love to take it up the butt.

PC and Wii U all the way you apologist peasants! Keep giving your butts to $ony and M$ for all I care.

      • Arthur Hughes

        lol funny troll

      • Morris ヅ

lol only good thing you wrote was ‘Wii U’

        you wasteman…

      • Slickst3r

What if a person has a shit load of space in their home do you think that person would care how big or small the console is? If someone has a shit load of money do you think they would care if the controller needs AA batteries? I bet you can’t reply to me without insulting me.

        • bizzy gie

Being able to afford being screwed over isn’t a counter for being screwed over.

          • Slickst3r

Not unless you don’t think of it as “getting screwed over”

          • bizzy gie

Still not a counter or excuse.

      • Slickst3r

I don’t think I would go to PC gaming cause if I do I would want a $12,000 and settle for no less.

      • Slickst3r

I don’t think I’m moving to PC gaming cause if I do I will want a $12,000 PC and settle for no less.

      • TomDobo

Give our butts to microsoft ??? I think your pc is running windows.

      • Sheldon Prescott

So many things to correct. MS has implied that backwards compatibility isn’t off the table yet. Even so, I don’t care too much about that. When I get a next gen console, I’ll lose all interest in current gen. I don’t understand the battery argument. I’ve had 8AA rechargeable Eneloop batteries for years now. I’m the only one? Paying for online? You have to do that now on PS4 don’t you?

        • ImperialAgent

Yeah I’m the same. I understand if someone really needs the money they might trade in their ps3 or 360 but the way backwards compatibility is talked about you’d think we all bin them on the day next-gen kicks off. Really not hard to store it somewhere. Not something I’d want to get rid of myself. Old consoles are the kinda thing that will always have a lot of sentimental value even if they’re never played.

          • Morris ヅ

they could prob make a emulator for the near future for Back-compat or mayb streaming you never know what the future hold

        • Morris ヅ

i would rather pay £15 on a plug and play if my pad life batt died then £50 on a new pad=PS4

        • PS4/WiiU

That’s why he said pc and wii u all the way. Not PS4.

      • HyperionLight

Because it takes tons of space

        ಠ_ಠ

Yep, I suppose we should cut down another rain forest or two…/s

And btw let’s see the “apologists” defend Sony for designing a ps4 as they did…you know… with real good heat dissipation in mind.

Btw the fun part starts at 2:50

Oh and I’ve already seen people moaning about a slim ps4…?!

        • bizzy gie

Some Xbox fanboys ignoring all the vents on the back of PS4.

          • Arthur Hughes

Thats not a lot of vents at all.

          • bizzy gie

The whole back of PS4 is dedicated to ventilation.

          • Arthur Hughes

try looking again. didn’t know your sight was as bad as your reading comprehension

          • bizzy gie
          • Arthur Hughes

            now read your comment ditzy.

          • bizzy gie

I still see vents all over the back.

I had no idea you were blind. I’m so sorry.

No wonder you blindly support XB1.

No wonder you can’t SEE a problem when it’s there.

          • Arthur Hughes

holy shit you can’t even comprehend what you say now. This is amazing.

          • bizzy gie

What I posted made perfect sense.

Don’t tell me you have brain cancer too?

          • Arthur Hughes

Now you have earned an achievement

          • bizzy gie

            mmhmm

          • Slickst3r

You said “The whole back of PS4 is dedicated to ventilation” no not the entire back of the PS4 is dedicated to ventilation do you even know what the word “whole” means? Maybe if you said “almost the entire back of the PS4 is dedicated to ventilation” then Arthur wouldn’t have replied with that comment.

          • Arthur Hughes

Don’t tell him why hes gone full retard. That’s why he got the achievement.

          • bizzy gie

Clearly it was figurative speech. I’m assuming you nor Arthur are familiar with it.

            Obviously, the back has ports.

I can’t even believe you’d take that literally.

          • Arthur Hughes

            ditzzy

        • Morris ヅ

          lol hahahahaaa

        • andrew salvat

Wow am very impress with the GlichStation4

      • Danny

WiiU and u alone on that one I guess.

    • Levi Johansen

because I cannot fit anymore of those in my bedroom. There are powerbricks and cords running all over the floor, sometimes I trip and I’ve nearly broken some games and consoles that way.

Of course, this is not a problem in the living room, where there are more space and a bigger and better TV-table.

We got tired of those bricks in the 90’s, it’s about time we saw the end of them!

    • Rocco

I Agree, I honestly don’t have a clue why people or (PR) wish to talk about the dumbest things. If gamers are so upset about a freakin power brick, then don’t complain about it online because it’s not going to magically go away. Just go get a PS4 then, and hope it all works out for you!

      • Slickst3r

I’m okay with it I just have NO FUCKING IDEA on where to put the Kinect I have a small ass room and I share it with my 2 brothers. I’m moving next year.

    • niall McCarthy

There is a reason why devices are getting smaller Because space is important to people these days in homes.
I’m not buying the xbox one because it’s simply too big for my room between the size of the console and the power brick it’s a joke.
xbox made it for the living room they designed it as a multi media system For family’s to enjoy hence why the knit
but xbox are forgetting the gamers that play games in their rooms or studies

  • xdlugia

I don’t mind its size because it was supposed to have a built in power brick, but now it doesn’t?
The size of the suitcase I use to bring my Xbox 360 with me on vacations etc. is limited. I could probably do the console and Kinect + the cables, but that brick uses a whole lot of space.

Oh and BTW desktops doesn’t have powerbricks, so they can be as much bulky as they want.

  • Bob Singh

The size of a power brick doesn’t matter unless you are gonna carry it around. In which case you’d just be better off with a handheld

  • SLOBMARE

    slobmare =real

  • krayzielilsmoki

I understand if you plan on traveling with this thing it would be an extra piece to carry but for something that is designed to be set under your tv and not be moved size shouldn’t matter (unless it’s something ridiculous)

  • Bill Bong

The Xbox One is bigger than it needs to be. This so that in 3 years you are shocked at how small the second version is and want to but it. You have just bought two Xbox Ones. Wow!

    • rsco6969

that is so true though that goes for ps aswell lol im a sucka for that strategy lol

    • datdude

Don’t worry about that. If Microsoft proves to be as inept as ever, there will be a red ring redux and you’ll all be buying mulitiple Xbones just as you have done this gen.

  • Vincent M. Lenzi

Past power bricks have gone behind my TV and stayed there out of sight. But this time I might leave it where everyone can see it because it is so sexy.

  • bizzy gie

This isn’t really a fair poll. You spent the whole article basically stating size doesn’t matter.

Plus most people here are pro-XB1. A lot of Xbox guys tried to defend DRM! Of course they’re not going to say size or a power brick matters.

    • Arthur Hughes

Its a joke poll derpis. Basically making fun of the idiots that say its to big.

    • Clel

I do feel like Xbox One Daily and PS4 daily both make their bias blatantly clear.
Like James was basically bashing the Xbone because of the size of its power brick. And like you said, here they’re telling you that the size is not an issue.

  • bizzy gie

Size matters. Some people have limited space.

My shelf is filled with music systems, DVD players, DVRs, and an Xbox 360.

I had to set my Wii U on a separate table in which it, with all of its accessories and games, takes up most of the space.

I know guys like to dismiss XB1 faults and I can’t blame you. You paid for this console and don’t want hear or be bothered with negatives surrounding your half a gran box.

However, this is a problem. Very minor and won’t affect everybody, but it still exists.

PS4 is more powerful and the power brick is internal yet it’s much, much thinner and smaller.

How big is that XB1 fan?

    • rsco6969

you could really get rid of you DVD player and just use your console *cough PS3 cough* didn’t see that in your list XD

      • bizzy gie

I wish, but there’s absolutely no room to set them anywhere else unless they’re somewhere goofy like in the bathroom or in the refrigerator.

        • Arthur Hughes

xbox one can be used as a DVD player and music player, your issue isnt space its retardation.

          • bizzy gie

Yeah, but I like watching the movies and listening to the music I already paid fir without a monthly fee.

          • Arthur Hughes

this is why i know your an idiot. you pay a monthly fee.

          • bizzy gie

            How so?

The monthly fee and yearly fee are the same price. For example, $5 a month and $50 are the same thing.

Oooooh. That’s right. This is MS we’re talking about.

            $10 a month or $60 a year.

So people can pay up to $120 a year for XBL if they decide to take the momentarily cheaper, monthly deal.

MS is the king of scamming.

          • Arthur Hughes

we need to come up with a new word for how dumb you are. I don’t think theirs a word in the English dictionary that currently fills that role.

          • bizzy gie

Another typical, ineffective reply from yours truly, Arthur.

          • Arthur Hughes

if you said anything that was correct you would get a reply. But as usually you spout BS and think it means something.

          • bizzy gie

And as usual, you don’t counter what you believe to be false, meaning my post WAS correct and you have no counter.

          • Arthur Hughes

your to much of a retard to try and explain to you why your wrong again. I would just be wasting my time since you can’t even comprehend what you type yourself

          • rsco6969

the fact that you keep saying the same thing in a different format would suggest that you are in fact the retard.

          • Arthur Hughes

we don’t need two pathetic ditzzys running around here. try trolling somewhere else.

          • rsco6969

          • Slickst3r

You don’t need to have online to listen to music on the Xbox nor to see movies you can watch movies on your Xbox as long as you already payed for it there is no need for Gold because you already bought the movie same goes for music.

          • Arthur Hughes

Will you stop telling him why he hes gone full retard. He won’t comprehend what you type anyways.

          • bizzy gie

Only because they’re 100% system based. MS couldn’t put on fee on those features if they wanted to (and I’m sure they want to).

          • Arthur Hughes

here it is for ditzy again

          • bizzy gie

You posted this already. Your trolling hasn’t been up to par lately.

was people saying that when that ugly ps3 came out…..

      • Guest

The first PS3 was a beast, but it still had an internal power supply… and an internal PS2 motherboard… and it was a damn fine DVD/Blu-ray player.

    • Game Master

      I agree with bizzy gie

Everyone doesn’t have a internet connection. True, I had dial up in tell June 7 2010.

Everyone doesn’t have plenty of space in their homes especially those who live in apartments. True, Apartments don’t have a lot of space as some might think, in less your ritch.

  • Espos

I think I’m going to buy both consoles so I can play with all of my friends. That way I won’t have to make about a decision and select the wrong console. Solution complete.

  • rsco6969

like i stated before im a massive sony fan (non immature one) and the one is actually starting to appeal to me not enough to get it over the ps4 but enough to purchase a year down the line i dont care if it has a massive antenna sticking out of it so long as it does what is promised, though i do wish they would remove the paygate on most of features but hey thats me

  • Winchester

it is actually a lot smaller than my av amp and about the same size as my cd player so it won’t look big next to my tv

  • HyperionLight

    How about a “LOL” option?

    • bizzy gie

      “Monstrocity”?

It was just poking fun at how MS has basically gotten bigger as time passes even though technology works the exact opposite.

I do agree a power brick is no reason to buy one console over the other, but it’s still pretty big.

Honestly, this article isn’t much better. It sways people towards one opinion on this matter then asks for a stance. It also fails to address the varied living conditions and environments of people.

      Let me summarize.

Because console size doesn’t affect gaming (it never has, but gaming isn’t the concern), it doesn’t matter and it’s stupid to think so.

      POLL

      So which do you believe?

      Size matters?

No not at all (hint: pick this one)?

      • HyperionLight

Mate I got nothing against the ps4, actually I think it’s a great gaming console…and in time I will probably get me one to play some of the exclusives coming out for it. And I was just being sarcastic or as you would say “poking fun” in regard to the “monstrosity of an article”.

I get it it’s a ps4 daily article and I expected some jabs, but monstrosity?

And the poll has validity, but he is asking about the xbox one size and power brick and I was referring to the power brick with the “lol” option.

And yes the trend is miniaturization…or well that’s the general idea, but: Galaxy Mega, Galaxy Note (I, II, III) HTC One Max, Nokia Bendit… Sony Honami.

And in regard to swaying people… I agree with everything he wrote and it doesn’t sway me at all. I mean if the ps4 was as big as the xbox one or bigger I wouldn’t have any problem with that. I get that people don’t have the space, but if that was me I would find it a minor inconvenience that would be fixed in no time.

Anyway what if they decided for that size for a specific reason/s? And what if the same engineers who designed the console decided to make an external power brick for the same reason/s…?

And in regards to your poll

Size would matter if they made a console bigger than my desktop pc otherwise no.

        • bizzy gie

It doesn’t matter if you agree or not. It’s still telling people to pick the ‘size doesn’t matter’ option.

Phablets are crosses between smartphones and tablets. They don’t ount

Phone screen sizes are getting larger, but remember that these phones are very thin.

          • HyperionLight

            Well it doesn’t to me.

But what I don’t get is, why didn’t people go ballistic when Nintendo made the Wii U bigger than the Wii or why doesn’t anyone bitch about the power brick of the Wii U?

Because I (I do own a Wii and a Wii U) and many others didn’t care about those things and still don’t…it’s a funny coincidence that people are bringing this up now when most of the (so called) mistakes MS did, have been corrected and not only that, but MS has shown some promising things as to why you should get an xbox one:

Headphones with every x1, unlimited cloud storage, better AI on Forza (and probably other games), Titanfall devs praising the cloud and the x1 version of the game even thought it’s coming to pc/360 too, gold sharing, built to last 10 years of nonstop usage, it supports 3rd party video capture equipment, every xbox act as a dev unit etc.

So to me this is nothing more than fanboys trying to find the negatives so that they can proudly say “I have a ps4 and not the xsh*t one”.

But let me ask you a question, if the roles were reversed and the ps4 was a bit bigger than what the x1 is and it had an external power brick, would you buy it?

            Now for the phablets….

Phablets are crosses between smartphones and tablets. They don’t count

Do explain in what way they don’t count as Samsung has sold 5 million original galaxy notes… and people can’t wait to get their hands on the new one.

Phone screen sizes are getting larger, but remember that these phones are very thin.

Have you ever held a galaxy note in your hand? And now Samsung is releasing the Galaxy Mega with 6.3 inches…or how about this

            http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s4_zoom-5447.php

    • misterhearn

Nope. Just noticed how people were making a big deal over nothing. As if they were looking for something to complain about. The size of a console or its power supply has nothing to do with its games or entertainment features. Have you ever seen someone cancel an appointment with a cable or satellite installer based on a DVR being too big?

If you buy a console based on size, the OUYA or OnLive Micro Console are the way to. People have a right to their own opinion, which is why I asked for feedback. This isn’t anything about the PS4, it’s about the way the Xbox One was built and people’s reaction to it.

Thanks for taking the time to read the post. Hope you enjoyed it.

      • HyperionLight

Yeah it’s funny how people are looking for excuses to “ridicule” the x1 when there’s not much to complain about.

And btw I agree with you on the whole article. I have so much stuff already, but I wouldn’t find it a problem to take some time and move things around or build/buy something to make more space….if there was a need for that.

  • datdude

I’m going to use the power brick as a jack stand for my car and the
kinect will sit bedside to beat would be burglars about the head and
face and send them to hospital and/or morgue.

    • HyperionLight

You can do whatever you want with it, but you’re telling me that you’ll buy a $500 gaming/multimedia device to destroy it or use it as a weapon?!

      An impressively smart move mate…

But tell me this, who do you think wins in the end?

      • audi lover

        Irony wins

      • datdude

Better I destroy it than it overheats and destroys itself. Ouch. The truth hurts.

The people who don’t care about the size of the console or the fact it has a power brick probably don’t care it’s overpriced and underpowered compared to the PS4 either. The fact it’s 2013 and it doesn’t have an upgradeable hard drive like the PS4 or the fact it’s 2013 and the Xbone somehow finds a way to not be bluetooth capable probably doesn’t concern them either. Some folks are just born suckers.

i feel sorry for you, It must be hard to be so stupid and be able to still type.

    • Slickst3r

We have the cloud a.k.a infinity Gigs!!! There is no need for a Hard Drive.

    • Arthur Hughes

      External HD, derpity

    • Guest

The lack of Bluetooth is astonishing. And I’ll be putting an SSD in my PS4 before I even switch it on.

You dont know the meaning of next gen. Stop spitting it out like you do. Bluetooth aint everything, its a preference. Just like some rather use firewire then usb, are they not current? Let me also give you all food for thought, external brick power, AA battery/recharge batt.pack – see what im doing there? When something goes wrong on pc, what do you do to fix it? Well i check the os with scans, no prob, gotta be hardware – pc there are easier ways to fix problems just by replacing parts rather then change the entire system. Xbox doing just that, poor handle of your xbox? Well you can replace the problem. You can change out the batteries when not keeping a charge any longer. Its preference and convience, but of course you will say “well this is 2013, why do you need to change anything out. It should be perfect” what?! Everything has a fault, microsoft just thinking about a plan to over come it.

We all know itll just sit in behind the console or under the bottom shelf of your tv stand and that will be the last time you’ll ever see it, I forgot my 360 even had a power brick and definitely can’t remember ever thinking it was in the way. This brick looks even smaller than the 360 one so in my opinion its a non issue and either way your still gonna have the same fricken mess of cables behind the tv that you always had which are the real eyesore not a power brick.

    • Morris ヅ

      amen

  • TomDobo

22% of playstation fanboys need to seriously pick a better fault than a power brick. Theres nothing wrong its out there for a reason. Maybe to keep it cooler i but i dont know just stop bitching about it.

    • Game Master

I’m not a playstation fanboy, I have a PS3, Wii U and I’m ganna try to get into PC gameing, and I still think the power brick is to big. Diden’t the 360 have a power brick around that size and still got the RROD

      • TomDobo

Yeah it did and that was just the launch models i have 2 360s the 20gb launch and the 250gb slim had no problems with either of them

  • Joel

Another nitpicky reason to hate on Xbox One.

  • The Unknown Legacy

Ummm I don’t see why people care much about the power brick. As long as you enjoy the console, you can look passed the size of that power brick. and for those who don’t have space for that power brick, then you should reevaluate your gaming space.

  • companyoflosers

the console still works like its supposed to last i checked. so what if the power brick is big and not part of the actual console. that should help reduce internal heat if anything. most people will plug this thing in and it will never move an inch so it wont affect the experience of owning and playing it.

    • Game Master

Most people take there console with them like I do.

      • companyoflosers

still shouldnt be a deal breaker thogh. if the power brick is an issue for you, then the person complaining is just looking for things to find wrong with it. we delt with it the whole last generation for every console we can deal with it this one too.

        • Guest

Err… not for *every* console we haven’t. The PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PS3 did not have external power supplies. All of them had standard figure-8 power cords and internal power supplies.

  • Bill Bong

It’s not the size that matters. It’s what it can do that matters.

  • snake8989

    Don’t stop believing .

  • snake8989

    > X51

  • snake8989

Of course there should be a reason for dat 5B transistors .

  • Danny

yes since I live in two countries It’s another thing to carry. Anybody who travels, soldiers, contractors, international businessmen; It’s extra weight and space. I guess if you live at mom’s then it’s cool.

  • Guest

Well, if you remember, one of the common reasons for failure in the early Xbox 360s was the power bricks overheating. In fact, there’s still a page on the Xbox website that gives this as a reason for RROD. Then, of course, there was the famous “Xbox 360 power cord bursting into flames” product recall. I’m guessing that’s why some people are rolling their eyes.

I think the other problem is that this is just another indicator of the unambitious design. Rather like American cars: big, chunky, noisy, power-hungry and rather poorly assembled… and we all know what’s happening to the American auto industry.

Regardless, it’s difficult to see why the more powerful PS4 is a fraction of the size, $100 cheaper and still manages to have an internal power supply… and bluetooth controllers… that you can charge over USB… with a glass touchscreen on the front.

    • Danny

I’m with you on the brick, but American cars have gotten a lot better as have their products. It’s better to accuse the U.S. public transportation which still sucks:)

      • Guest

Well, not wanting to go off-topic, but although American car manufacturers are starting to make better profits at home, they’re losing big time in the export market, and therefore profits are still down overall.

        • Danny

Lol, yeah we are off topic. Could be true, don’t care because I hate cars ( pollution, sprawl, etc.). We should be like Holland and all ride bikes:). In Holland PS4 sales 4/1 against xbone and Hollanders are always right about everything. There! Back on topic.

  • nastyass

you prick if i want a small console i should be able to get one. i don’t need to get a gamecube or ps2 slim fux off man i’m gonna get a ps4 lmao ho
